    The formula

    How gold price is calculated

Gold value = weight in grams × rate per gram × (karat ÷ 24), when the rate you have is for 24K. If your jeweller quotes the rate for the karat you are buying, leave out the karat step.

Wastage = gold value × wastage %. Making charges = gold value × making % (or grams × making per gram). Total = gold value + wastage + making, before any tax.

    Example: 2 tola of 22K at a 24K rate of 300,000 per tola. 2 tola = 23.328 g; the rate per gram is 300,000 ÷ 11.6638 = 25,721; gold value = 23.328 × 25,721 × 22/24 = 550,000. With 5% wastage (27,500) and 8% making (44,000), the total is 621,500. Need tola in grams? Use the tola to gram converter.

    FAQ

    Questions

How do I calculate the price of gold jewellery?
Convert the weight to grams, multiply by the karat purity (22 ÷ 24 for 22K) and by today’s 24K rate per gram. Then add the wastage percentage and the making charges your jeweller applies. The calculator above shows each step.
How is 22K gold price worked out from the 24K rate?
    Multiply the 24K rate by 22 ÷ 24 (91.67%). If 24K is 300,000 per tola, 22K works out to 300,000 × 0.9167 = 275,000 per tola, before making charges.
What are making charges and wastage?
Making charges are the jeweller’s labour fee, charged either as a percentage of the gold value or as an amount per gram. Wastage is extra gold weight charged for metal lost while making the piece, usually a percentage of the weight.
Does this calculator show today’s gold rate?
No. Gold rates change through the day and differ by city, so you type in today’s rate from your local market or jeweller. The calculator does the maths.
    Is tax included?
No. The total is before any sales tax or GST, which depends on where you buy. Use the reverse sales tax calculator to split tax out of a tax-inclusive bill.
