Reverse GST, also called GST back calculation, finds the taxable value and the GST inside an inclusive price.
Total ÷ (1 + rate)Total − Price before taxPrice × ratePrice × (1 + rate)GST is charged on the taxable value, so an inclusive price is taxable value × (1 + rate). To remove GST you divide: at 18% divide by 1.18, at 10% divide by 1.1, at 5% divide by 1.05.
Subtracting the rate from the total gives the wrong answer. 18% of 11,800 is 2,124, but the GST charged was 1,800.
To take GST out of a tax-inclusive price, divide by the figure in the second column. To find the GST inside the total, multiply by the third.
| GST rate | Price before tax = total ÷ | GST = total × | Example: 1,000 incl. tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3% | 1.03 | 0.029126 | 970.87 + 29.13 |
| 5% | 1.05 | 0.047619 | 952.38 + 47.62 |
| 9% | 1.09 | 0.082569 | 917.43 + 82.57 |
| 10% | 1.1 | 0.090909 | 909.09 + 90.91 |
| 12% | 1.12 | 0.107143 | 892.86 + 107.14 |
| 15% | 1.15 | 0.130435 | 869.57 + 130.43 |
| 17% | 1.17 | 0.145299 | 854.70 + 145.30 |
| 18% | 1.18 | 0.152542 | 847.46 + 152.54 |
| 28% | 1.28 | 0.21875 | 781.25 + 218.75 |
| 40% | 1.4 | 0.285714 | 714.29 + 285.71 |

In EloERP each tax rate is set once as inclusive or exclusive. Every POS sale and invoice then splits the price into the amount before tax and the tax itself, and posts the tax to its own ledger account. In Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, the UAE and Lesotho it also files the invoice with the tax authority.
